Four Hiring Managers Secrets to Interview Preparation

Four Hiring Managers’ Secrets to Interview Preparation Four Hiring Managers Secrets to Interviews Congratulations! You secured a phone or face-to-face interview. Your odds of “winning” the job in this highly competitive environment just skyrocketed. Now, don’t blow it. There are books, blogs, videos, and more on how to ace that interview, including my own book, Cut the Crap, Get a Job! Right now, however, I want to share my top four secrets from the hiring manager’s side of the table. After interviewing thousands and hiring hundreds in big corporations and small start-ups, I want to help you come out on the top of the list after every interview. Ready? 1. Compare yourself to the Job Description that the hiring manager wrote. I recommend you do this work before you apply so you can write a fabulous cover letter, but let’s fast forward to the interview. Take out a piece of paper (or open a Word document on your computer). Draw 3 columns in a table and add the following content in short bulleted points. Column 1: Major requirements from the job descriptions. Column 2: Your skills for that requirement Column 3: Stories or examples of how you performed that task. Here’s why this preparation works: Column 1 is the list of items that the interviewer needs to measure you against. Column 2 is your answer to, “Have you done this before?” Column 3 is the answer to, “Tell me about a time when you…” This is called a situational or behavioral interview question and it is becoming more common. 2. Prepare your answers to the most commonly asked interview questions. I still find it shocking to watch candidates stumble on, “What are your strengths?” or “Why do you want this job?” Write down your short answers to the following before you go into an interview (an entire cheat sheet for these questions and many more are free with my book): What are your greatest strengths? What are your greatest weaknesses? Tell me about yourself. How do you handle stress and pressure? Describe a difficult work situation and how you overcame it. Why are you leaving your current job? OR Why did you leave your past position? 3. The Interview Law of 3s. For your preparation for #1 and #2 above AND for any other questions asked during the interview, use this major trick, which will help you and the interviewer. The Law of 3s: For every question, you are only allowed no more than 3 short, concise answers. Think and talk in bullet points. If the interviewer wants more information, they will ask you. This rule will prevent you from babbling on and on, which we do when we are nervous. For the interviewer, you will come across more confident, self-aware, and prepared. 4. Prepare great questions for them! The interviewer is not the only one with questions; you should have several carefully considered questions for him or her. See an earlier Business Journal article where I give some examples. Again, congratulations on you securing a phone or face-to-face interview! Block several hours of time to prepare, follow the above tips, and you will do a great job. Contact me if you have any questions or challenges related to your career or job search.

Why You Stay in a Career You Hate - Kathy Caprino

Why You Stay in a Career You Hate Talking and working with individuals consistently who are in vocations or occupations they despise intensely, I've asked myself, How could we get here? How has it happened that so a huge number of individuals have gotten miserable, furious and disappointed about their job? Obviously, there are numerous elements at play here, including the ascent of innovation â€" that makes defining limits around our expert lives for all intents and purposes impossible. Further, in the previous 30 years, we've become captives to the all powerful greenback, dependent on securing things we can't manage, which keeps us working long and hard just to break even. Additionally, numerous individuals bounced into specific employments or fields from the get-go in their vocations, just to find 10 or after 20 years that they can't discover an exit plan. Be that as it may, I accept there are considerably more profound purposes behind this plague of individuals loathing what they do every day for their living. These reasons address fundamental enthusiastic, otherworldly and conduct conditions, and uncover a profound separation to living euphorically, legitimately, and definitively. I realize a few people will expose this post, asserting they have definitely no decision in the issue, and that theyre stuck doing this work. But I dont see life that way. I accept we generally have new options, new ways, new solutions available to us, if we can essentially focus on making a superior life. In light of the criticism I've gotten from many experts here and abroad, I've watched the accompanying eight center reasons why individuals despise their careers. As I share these, know this â€" I'm not sitting in judgment of any of these; truth be told, I've survived all of these conditions. 1) You don't have any acquaintance with yourself Most by far of individuals I find in the work environment simply don't have any acquaintance with themselves at all. When asked, What's your top need throughout everyday life and in your vocation? What might you quit any pretense of anything for? or When you're 90 thinking back, what would you like to have done, been, and abandoned? I get clear gazes and mouths hanging open. People don't have any acquaintance with themselves well or profoundly anymore. Why? Perhaps in light of the fact that we don't make time in our lives to become acquainted with ourselves â€" we're only too over-the-top busy. Or maybe the way toward realizing oneself profoundly is threatening and scary. Whatever the explanation â€" in the event that you don't have the foggiest idea what your identity is, at your center, and a big motivator for you and care about, how might you lead an actual existence that lines up with your requirements, qualities, and interests? (My free Career Path Self-Assessment will a ssist you with realizing yourself better, in the event that you need to.) 2) You know yourself, however you make yourself wrong In this circumstance, you know yourself and what you need, however you essentially make yourself wrong. You let yourself know, Better believe it, I need to change, yet I'm inappropriate to feel that way. Or I'm fortunate to have a vocation, so I shouldn't cause trouble or I have so a lot â€" I should simply feel honored and not complain. such huge numbers of individuals (ladies specifically) question the legitimacy of their emotions or stifle their most profound longings since they believe they're inappropriate to have them. Until you can make yourself right, you can't discover harmony or delight. 3) You've lost the mental fortitude to act For some, who recognize what they need, they've lost the mental fortitude to take hard action. We've been tempted by some wrong idea that life ought to be easy. Where did we get that idea? Making life change isn't simple, yet it's so justified, despite all the trouble, particularly in the event that you abhor where you are today. It takes mental fortitude, coarseness, and responsibility to realize enduring change, and you can do it, however just in the event that you choose to interface with your own inner force, boldness and strength.
